United Airlines has unveiled its most luxurious aircraft yet: a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner featuring a dramatically upgraded cabin designed to attract high-spending travelers. The airline showcased the plane in Los Angeles on Tuesday, signaling a major investment in premium seating options.
Elevated Interior: A New Standard for Luxury
The new Dreamliner, dubbed “Elevated” by United, boasts a completely redesigned interior with state-of-the-art seating in all classes. The centerpiece is an expanded Polaris business-class cabin with 64 lie-flat suites, including eight ultra-exclusive “Polaris Studios.” This move reflects a broader trend in the industry: airlines are betting big on customers willing to pay extra for superior comfort and privacy.
Polaris Studios: The Pinnacle of In-Flight Luxury
The Polaris Studios, arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, offer unparalleled space and amenities. Couples traveling together can even convert the center seats into a makeshift double bed. These suites feature a massive 27-inch entertainment screen, exclusive pajamas, caviar service, and tarmac transfers for an elevated boarding experience.
Redesigned Cabins Throughout the Aircraft
Beyond business class, the Elevated 787-9 also features a revamped Premium Plus (premium economy) cabin with 35 recliners and enhanced privacy dividers. The main cabin has been upgraded with 13-inch 4K seatback screens, the largest in economy class, and Bluetooth connectivity for personal headphones.
A Shift in Seating Distribution
Notably, only 40% of the plane’s 222 seats are standard coach, indicating a deliberate skew toward premium seating. This suggests United expects a significant portion of passengers to choose higher-fare options or redeem miles for upgrades.
Initial Routes and Future Expansion
United plans to deploy the Elevated 787-9 on flights from San Francisco (SFO) to Singapore starting April 22, followed by service to London Heathrow (LHR) on April 29. The airline expects to receive 20 of these planes by 2026, signaling a long-term commitment to this high-end strategy.
This unveiling comes alongside other fleet upgrades, including a Polaris-equipped Airbus A321 for transcontinental routes and a potential first-class regional jet. The airline is clearly positioning itself as a leader in premium air travel, betting that travelers will respond to the increased luxury and exclusivity.
The launch of this aircraft marks a significant move toward catering to high-value customers and solidifying United’s position in the competitive international travel market.
