American Express will launch its first airport lounge in mainland China at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) in late April. The new space, part of the American Express Global Lounge Collection, expands the issuer’s network to include a key travel hub in the region.

Lounge Details and Design

The 1,572-square-foot lounge will be located before security on the 21M floor of Terminal 2 at SHA. Passengers can access the lounge through a dedicated security screening lane (subject to airport availability).

The design incorporates Shanghai’s architectural style, with local food and beverage options. The space includes seating for individual travelers, small groups, and those seeking a more formal dining experience. A terrace provides runway views for plane-spotting.

Access for Cardholders

Eligible American Express cardholders receive complimentary access to the SHA lounge, with guest privileges varying by card type. The following cards grant access:

  • American Express Platinum Card®
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Centurion Card from American Express (business and personal)

The lounge is designed for both business and leisure travelers, offering premium amenities for relaxation before flights.

Expansion and Future Plans

This expansion marks a significant step for American Express in the Chinese market. Whether this first lounge will be followed by additional locations in other major Chinese cities remains to be seen. The move suggests a growing interest in catering to premium travelers in the region.

The new lounge is designed for local, regional, and international business and leisure travelers, offering premium amenities and a beautiful place to relax before your flight.

The opening of this lounge will likely influence future credit card selections among frequent travelers in mainland China.
